284- Happiness and Meaning

Everybody wants to live a happy and meaningful life.

In theory, both ingredients should be easy to work towards simultaneously since they support one another. Those who experience increased meaning in their lives also experience increased happiness, while those that feel happier often feel more encouraged to pursue a meaningful path.

But the two don’t always go hand in hand. For example, people who raise children often experience a decrease in happiness but increased meaningfulness.

Meaningfulness is a byproduct of grit, passion, and perseverance for long-term goals, while happiness reflects comfort and how we feel in the moment. But how do we choose which to prioritize?

I think it’s about looking one step deeper and thinking about where we find purpose. When we understand why we do what we do, we can set better long-term goals and create comfortable conditions to do it sustainably.
