38/365 – ” What/who do you blame for your discomfort? ”
A common reaction to the feeling of discomfort is a desire to fix ourselves to bring harmony back to a situation.
In some ways, this is a helpful frame – since we are the one thing we truly have control over.
But sometimes, that feeling of discomfort is actually a sign that the environment itself is toxic and needs fixing.
For example, the rise of eco-anxiety in Gen Z is not a symptom of a fragile and sensitive generation – but a perfectly reasonable adverse reaction to a system that is exploitive, extractive, selfish, unequal, and unsustainable.
Discomfort is a sign that something needs fixing, but we must ensure we’re improving the right thing.
